Duo begins tournament play Thursday
NCAA Men's Tennis Doubles Championship Draw
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Memphis men's tennis duo Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson, who were selected as alternates for the NCAA doubles tournament, have gained entry into the field of 32 and will begin play on Thursday afternoon.
The senior tandem, who rank No. 40 nationally, will face the 35th-ranked team of Bar Botzer and Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest on Thursday at 4 p.m. (CT) at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
"It's been fun to watch them play doubles together this season," head coach Paul Goebel said. "These two have helped set the example that hard work and dedication truly pay off. To see them forge a doubles partnership this year and improve their skill in that area of the game, it's remarkable."
Peniston and Watson compiled a 13-7 doubles record in the dual match season and notched four wins against top-60 opponents throughout the year. Partnering in doubles for the first time in their careers, the Great Britain teammates were also selected to the American Athletic Conference's all-conference team for both singles and doubles.
The duo becomes just the second doubles team in program history to earn an appearance into the NCAA doubles tournament and first since Tiger tandem David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury made the field of 32 in 2014. With Peniston currently competing in the NCAA singles tournament, 2018 marks the first season Memphis has had representatives in both the NCAA singles and doubles tournament.
