Senior to face AAC foe Constantin Schmitz on Thursday
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite a slow start, Memphis men's tennis senior Ryan Peniston turned in a straight-set victory to open the NCAA singles tournament on Wednesday morning at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
No. 36 Peniston defeated No. 55 Carlos Divar of Georgia Tech, 6-2, 6-2. The Great Wakering, Great Britain native will face fellow American Athletic Conference senior, No. 15 Constantin Schmitz in the second round on Thursday with the first serve time to be announced later on Wednesday.
Trailing 0-2 early in the first frame against Divar, Peniston earned a break to even the set at 2-2. The three-time all-conference honoree claimed the next four games to win the first set.
In the second set, Peniston and Divar held serve until Peniston went up a break to take a 4-2 lead, and then took the next two games to complete the 6-2, 6-2 win.
Tulane's Schmitz defeated No. 121 Jordan Benjamin of Dayton in three sets to open the tournament. Peniston holds a 2-1 record against Schmitz in their four-year collegiate careers, including wins in the previous two meetings.
