STARKVILLE, Miss. — In their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in seven seasons, the Memphis men's tennis team will open its run Friday morning against South Alabama (14-9).
First serve is set for 10 a.m. at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. Fans can purchase tickets by visiting https://bit.ly/2KOaAqm. Single-day tickets are on sale for $5, with $3 tickets available for senior citizens, college students and youth under 17 years of age. A live stream and scoring will be available at http://hailstate.com/sports/2016/12/7/mens-tennis-live.aspx.
The No. 21 Tigers (18-5), whose first NCAA Tournament berth in 2012 was also in Starkville, feature a trio of seniors at the top of their singles lineup. No. 36 Ryan Peniston anchors the top spot with a 15-2 record, while No. 88 Andrew Watson holds a 17-3 record and seeks to continue the momentum of a 13-match win streak. On court 3, Kai Lemke is 14-5, including an 8-1 mark in his previous nine decisions.
Peniston and Watson earned American Athletic Conference honors last week in both singles and doubles. Peniston's accolades are the third time in his career he has been listed all-conference, while Watson earned his second all-conference nod after being named the league's Freshman of the Year in 2015. The duo ranks No. 40 in doubles and became the first Tiger tandem since 2015 to earn all-conference honors.
Memphis is 5-4 all-time against South Alabama, including victories in the previous three meetings.
The Jaguars enter their 12th NCAA Tournament in school history and first since 2008 with a 14-9 mark. In doubles, South Alabama is led by duo Loic Cloes and Clement Marzol, who rank 53rd nationally. In singles, Cloes holds a 20-1 record between the top two courts.
Memphis is 3-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and is search of their first win since 2014.
