PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Rafael Vallery has been named American Athletic Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is the first conference weekly accolade in Vallery's career.
It also is the sixth time in this outdoor campaign's seven weeks that Memphis has received an honor from the conference. In all, 10 Tigers have earned weekly awards this season.
At last weekend's Memphis Invitational, Vallery recorded personal-bests in both the discus and shot put and also placed second in both events. It was the fourth time this season he finished among the top-three in both events at the same meet. In addition, Vallery has two throws titles this season, winning the shot put at Mississippi State's Bulldog Relays Mar. 23-24 and discus at Southeast Missouri's Joey Haines Invitational Mar. 30-31. Overall, he has 11 top-three performances in the discus and shot put combined this season.
The Bonn, Germany, native threw a 191-3 (58.30m) in the discus, out-distancing his previous-best by nearly five feet. His 60-7.25 (18.47m) effort in the shot put improved his personal-best by nearly a foot in the event.
His marks in the discus and shot put both are second among the American Athletic Conference throwers. Nationally, Vallery is 14th in the discus and 35th in the shot put.
The Tigers are off from competition this weekend, but return to action at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships May 10-13 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The University of Cincinnati is the host school for the league's championship weekend.
