Tigers in 5th place after opening day of Ryman Intercollegiate

Harris finishes at 2-under 140 to lead Memphis contingent
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Led by Chase Harris and Rodi Vlasveld, the University of Memphis men's golf team shot 19-over 587 on the opening day of the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate. The Tigers are in fifth place going into Tuesday's final round.
Harris, a junior from Jackson, Tenn., fired rounds of 72 and 68 and Vlasveld, from the Netherlands, posted scores of 70 and 72 during Monday's competition at Richland Country Club. Par at the 6,943-yard course is 71.
Rice held the lead at 3-over par in the 14-team event. Trailing Rice was Western Kentucky (+12), Lipscomb (+12), Cincinnati (+18) and Memphis (+19). Mitchell Meissner of Rice paced the field by firing a 6-under 136, which included an opening-round 4-under 67. Meissner tied two others in the field for the lowest score (67) of the first day.
Harris, who tied for seventh in the UofM's last event -- The Cleveland Palmetto, continued his solid play this spring. He has shot 72 or lower in seven of his eight rounds. Vlasveld has been consistent in his two spring tournaments with three rounds of 70 or lower.
Other Tigers participating included Jordan Even (78-75 for 153), Borja Martin (78-77 for 155) and Brad Bawden (75-81 for 156). Nick Giles participated as an individual and shot 73-75 for 148.
After the Ryman Intercollegiate, the Tigers close the regular-season at the Old Waverly Intercollegiate April 16 and 17 in West Point, Miss. Memphis participates in the American Athletic Conference Championship April 22-24 at Palm Harbor, Fla.
