Tigers unable to dig out of early hole against Bearcats

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Memphis dug itself an early hole and was unable to rally, as Cincinnati won 8-7 Sunday to complete the sweep at Marge Schott Stadium. The Tigers (9-23, 1-8 AAC) will return home for eight of the next nine games.

Cincinnati busted out to a 6-0 lead through the first four innings, scoring two in the first, three in the second and one more in the fourth. The Bearcats tacked on two more runs in the late innings to finish off the game.

Alec Trela provided some late excitement, hitting his second home run of the weekend in the top of the ninth inning. The Three-run blast cut the deficit to one run.

Trela finished 2-for-5 with four RBI. Cale Hennemann also had a two-hit day, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Memphis cut into the Bearcats lead with three runs in the fifth, taking advantage of some shaky Bearcat defense.

Keith Stepter started the inning with a double to left field and scored on an RBI single by Evan Bell. Back-to-back errors loaded the bases with nobody out before Alec Trela singled to drive in a second run.

Cale Hennemann worked a bases-loaded walk to trim the Cincinnati lead to 6-3.

Cincinnati added an insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run by Eric Santiago.

Hunter Smith came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning and pitched well in relief. Smith pitched 3 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. He allowed just one run on one hit.

Memphis got another run across in the eighth after Hennemann hit a triple and scored on RBI groundout by Jason Santana.

The Bearcats tacked on one more run in the eighth off of reliever Blake Bennett to make the score 8-4.

Memphis will play Arkansas State for two midweek games, first at FedExPark April 10 at 6:30 p.m. and then at Tomlinson Stadium in Jonesboro, Ark on April 11 at 6:30 p.m.
