FAIRFAX, Va. – University of Memphis women's soccer senior defender Sessen Stevens has been named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar semifinalist as published in the Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine Thursday.
Stevens was one of five student-athletes in the American Athletic Conference to be named a semifinalist. In addition to their athletic ability, students named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2, be at least a sophomore academically, and be active on their campuses or in their communities. Nominated by their respective institutions, these students were chosen from over 1,000 minority student-athletes.
"Sessen is the true definition of a student-athlete," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "Not only did she get it done on the field, but everything she brought off the field made her a true ambassador to the University of Memphis and our women's soccer program."
Stevens, a double major in biology and chemistry, carries a 3.82 grade-point average and has been heavily involved in community service projects not only regionally, but internationally as well. In 2017, Stevens volunteered with the International Children's Heart Foundation (ICHF) in the Dominican Republic for two weeks. Stevens' goal is to pursue medical school in order to one day go overseas and work in or open a clinic to treat those in underdeveloped countries who do not have easy access to medicine and healthcare.
Locally, Stevens has volunteered with numerous organizations and events including the St. Jude Marathon, Zumbathon and Target House, Habitat for Humanity, Koolen-de-vries Syndrome Carnival, Foundation Fighting Blindness Walk and the Youth Village 5K/10K race. Stevens has also accrued over 100+ hours of service on Helper Helper and has been involved with Relay for Life and the Special Olympics.
"From the hard work Sessen devoted to the classroom, to all of the hours of community service she participated in, it's hard to put into words how great of a person she really is," added Monaghan. "She is type of student-athlete every coach dreams of having the opportunity to work with."
Past Ashe scholars include: Baylor University's Robert Griffin III (2011); the University of Tennessee's Kara Lawson (2003); San Diego State University's Marshall Faulk (1993); and the University of Kansas' Jacque Vaughn (1996).
