Apr 20, 2018 | Baseball
Tigers and Pirates to play doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Alex Hicks pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs, but Memphis was unable to hold off No. 11 ECU for a 5-1 loss Friday at FedExPark. The Tigers (13-26, 1-9 AAC) and Pirates will finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
Hicks pitched past the sixth inning for the first time this season, getting into the eighth inning for just the second time in his career. He matched his career high with 7 2/3 innings pitched.
Despite a solid performance on the mound from Hicks the Tigers had three errors in the field, which led to three unearned runs.
Colton Neel finished 2-for-4 at the plate and scored the Tigers only run of the game.
ECU grabbed the lead in the fourth inning after loading the bases with one out. A wild pitch scored the first run of the ballgame, but Hicks managed to get out of the jam without any more damage.
Memphis came right back to tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth after three-straight two-out singles. Colton Neel started the two-out rally with a single before Kyle Ouellete singled to put two runners on base. Nick Vaage delivered the RBI hit to knot the game up.
The 1-1 tie was short-lived though, as the Pirates scored three unearned runs to take a 4-1 lead. The inning featured three ECU hits and two errors by the Tigers defense.
ECU tacked on an insurance run on a pair of hits in the top of the eighth inning to extend the lead to 5-1.
