Tigers earn eighth straight win
Box Score
DALLAS, Texas – Memphis women's tennis scored revenge Wednesday morning, defeating Cincinnati 4-1 in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Championships.
The Tigers (16-7, 3-3) extended their win streak to eight matches and now face second-seeded Tulsa in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Having dropped the previous three meetings to the Bearcats, including a 5-2 decision earlier this season, the Tigers struck quickly in doubles and used three singles wins from the top of their lineup to earn the victory.
"What a great team effort today," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "The doubles was impressive. The energy that everyone came out with was awesome. We set the tone early with some aggressive doubles."
Memphis won the opening doubles point for the sixth consecutive contest. At the top spot, freshmen duo Laura Bente and Alisha Reayer grabbed a 6-0 win. Tandem Josephine Cao and Hanna Sohn followed with a sweep of court 3 to secure the early advantage.
Sohn turned in her seventh straight win to open singles play. The senior took court 2 by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to extend the Tiger lead to 2-0.
Cincinnati (11-10, 2-3) got on the board with a win on court 4 to trim the gap, but Bente closed out the No. 3 position in straight sets to push the Memphis lead to 3-1.
After splitting the first two frames, senior Anki Wind cruised in the third set for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory and clinched the match for Memphis.
"In singles, it was a battle of attrition. The conditions were tough with steady winds and some strong gusts," Perez said. "The girls were focused and it showed. Cincinnati is a tough team and always come to play, and today was no exception. We're very proud of our team and how they have come together this year. We are looking forward to a tough match with Tulsa."
Thursday's meeting between the Tigers and Tulsa (18-5, 5-0) will mark the first contest between the programs since 2015.
