Tigers back in action at Arkansas State this weekend.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Saida Burns-Moore and Davon DeMoss have been named American Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Burns-Moore earned the conference's Female Field Athlete of the Week award, and DeMoss the league's Male Track Athlete of the Week distinction.
It is the first weekly honor in Burns-Moore's career at Memphis, and the weekly award was DeMoss' first of his outdoor career. He also was named the conference's Male Track Athlete of the Week once during the 2017-18 indoor season.
It also is the second time this outdoor campaign that Memphis earned two or more honors in the same week. The Tigers had three performers honored following Memphis' season-opening meet at the Rhodes College Invitational in mid-March. Of the five weeks in the 2018 outdoor season to date, Memphis has received at least one weekly award four times (seven total).
Competing against inclement weather that included tornado warnings at Ole Miss' Joe Walker Invitational last weekend, Burns-Moore set the school record in the women's high jump with a 5-10.5 (1.79m) effort. DeMoss placed first in all four events – 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay – in which he ran.
Burns-Moore won the women's high jump and broke the previous school record of 5-10 (1.78m) by Chen Edri in 2007. The Bronx, N.Y., native improved her personal-best in the event by nearly two inches. Burns-Moore also took first-place in the women's triple jump with a personal-best 41-5 (12.62m) leap. It was the first time she won both events at the same meet since May of 2016 when she took home the East Coast Conference high and triple jump championships as a member of the University of the District of Columbia track and field program.
Her marks in both events are ranked in the top-three in The American. She is second in the high jump and third in the triple jump. Burns-Moore's high jump is ranked 13th nationally.
DeMoss, a Jackson, Tenn., native, ran in all four events for the first time this outdoor season. He won four titles at the same meet for the first time in his career. He is ranked in the top-five in both the 100 and 200 meters in The American. His 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams both are second in the conference.
Earlier this season, DeMoss was a member of the 4x400 meter relay that set the school record (3:08.51), breaking the previous 40-year-old mark. Last season, he set school records in the 100 meters (outdoor), 60 meters (indoor) and 200 meters (indoor).
Memphis returns to action this Friday-Saturday, Apr. 20-21 at the Red Wolves Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark.
