ORLANDO, Fla. – With five singles matches going the distance Thursday afternoon, the Memphis women's tennis team finished strong and fended off Penn State for a 6-1 neutral-site win against the Nittany Lions.
The Tigers won the opening doubles point on courts 1 and 3 to take an early 1-0 advantage. Despite dropping the opening set on three courts in singles play, the Tigers fought back for five wins to set the 6-1 final.
"What a great fight from this team today. We took care of business in doubles and, emotionally, that was a big help," head coach Hayden Perez said. "In singles, we were pushed at every position, and even in our only straight-set match, it was really tight and competitive. We were mentally tough and that was the key."
In singles, Anki Wind anchored the top spot for the Tigers and provided the lone straight-set match of the day. Wind took down the Nittany Lions' Gabby O'Gorman 6-4, 7-6 to extend her singles win streak to nine matches.
"It is fun to watch Anki compete right now," Perez said. "She is a confident player right now, and that confidence is helping her greatly."
Despite dropping their first sets, Hanna Sohn and Katherine Cao won their next two frames on courts 2 and 6, respectively, to complete the comeback victories. Cao's win also extended her singles win streak to five matches.
Penn State's lone win came on court 5 in a three-set battle, while freshmen Laura Bente and Alisha Reayer bounced back from second-set loses for wins on courts 2 and 3.
Memphis will travel to Tampa on Friday with a noon first serve against the USF Bulls. The Bulls lead the all-time series 8-2, while Memphis won the last meeting – a 4-3 home victory in 2015.
