Fans invited to open practice at Brentwood Academy
MEMPHIS – For the second time in Mike Norvell's three seasons at Memphis, the Tiger football team will venture east on I-40 to Nashville for an open practice. The team will practice on Saturday, April 7 at Brentwood Academy at 3 p.m.
The University of Memphis Alumni Association will host a tailgate with food and beverages provided beginning at 1 p.m. Fans are asked to RSVP at the Alumni Association's website (HERE). Gates will open at 1:00. No outside food or alcohol will be permitted on the Brentwood Academy campus.
Norvell first took his Tiger team on the road prior to the 2016 season, playing at Father Ryan High School.
The 2017 scrimmage will be practice number 11 of 15 of the spring calendar for the Tigers, who finished the 2016 season ranked number 24 in the coaches' poll and number 25 in the Associated Press year-end poll. Memphis, which was 10-3 last season, suffered its only losses of the year to undefeated UCF (twice) and Iowa State (in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl), and will this time return to Nashville with a number of Tigers coming home.
Rising sophomore cornerback T.J. Carter, a graduate of Stratford High School, was named the American Athletic Conference's newcomer of the year after starting all 13 games as a true freshman with a team-high five interceptions. Carter was also named a Freshman All-America honoree by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), USA Today and ESPN.com. A second team, all-conference honoree, Carter finished the year with 11 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, including one on his first collegiate snap, and one forced fumble. He also ranked fifth on the roster with 69 total tackles and was named the Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week after Memphis' comeback road win against Houston. Trailing 17-0 at halftime, the Tigers came back and Carter forced a fumble and grabbed an interception in the final three minutes of that 42-38 victory to seal the game.
Bradley Jones and Obinna Eze are also returning to Nashville. Jones will be joined by another Stratford graduate, Jerome Ward, while Eze is a graduate of Davidson Academy. Jones and Eze both redshirt last season.
Memphis will play seven games at home in the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in 2018, including a Oct. 13th game with UCF, a rematch of the AAC Championship game, and a rematch with Houston on Black Friday (Nov. 23). Season tickets are on sale now at www.GoTigersGoTix.com.
