Tigers senior named Male Field Athlete of the Week.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Michael Criticos has been named the American Athletic Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
It is the second conference weekly honor of his career. Criticos also earned the accolade his freshman campaign in 2015.
Criticos placed third in the men's javelin at last weekend's Mississippi State/Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays in Starkville, Miss. His throw of 229-8.5 (70.01m) was Criticos' best effort since he set the school and American Athletic Conference record in the event at the 2016 league championships (235-9; 71.85m).
His 229-8.5 (70.01m) throw is second in The American and also ranks 10th nationally.
Criticos' top-three finish last weekend was the 23rd of his career, including the 2016 conference crown and two league runner-up performances (2015, 2017). He has a current streak of top-three finishes in the men's javelin in his last 15 regular-season meets, dating back to the first outdoor meet of the 2016 campaign (Alabama Relays/5th place). The senior has 14 javelin crowns in his career.
The Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, native is a two-time All-America second teamer in the men's javelin with 13th-place finishes at the 2015 and 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He's also advanced to the NCAA East Preliminaries all three seasons.
Earlier this month, Criticos was named the American Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's outdoor track and field. He receives a $2,000 scholarship from the league office that can be applied to graduate or professional studies.
Criticos is one of nine Tigers heading to the 2018 Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, this weekend. Memphis also is scheduled to compete in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., and the Joey Haines Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Mar. 30-31.
