Tigers sweep men's, women's javelin crowns at Rhodes College Invitational Friday.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis graduate student Martina Rodriguez Sala set a school record in the women's 5000 meters to lead the Tigers' effort in rainy first-day action at the Rhodes College Invitational Friday.
The Rhodes Invitational is the outdoor season opener for Memphis. Action in the two-day meet continues Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m. (CT).
Rodriguez Sala, who returns for her final outdoor campaign in 2018, won the women's 5000 meters in a school-record time of 16:34.51. Her time bettered the previous school record by 14 seconds and broke a mark that stood for 11 seasons (16:48.86 by Emily Malinowski in 2007).
It is Rodriguez Sala's second outdoor and her fourth overall (outdoor/indoor combined) school record. She set the women's outdoor 1500 meters in 2016. Rodriguez Sala also holds the program indoor marks in the mile and 3000 meters.
