Women’s Golf Fifth Following First Round at Augusta

Goldenstein tied for fourth through 18 holes.
MEMPHIS – Senior Emily Goldenstein is tied for fourth in the individual standings and she and her Lady Tiger teammates are tied for fifth in the team competition through the opening round of the 3M Augusta Invitational.
After bogeying one and three to start the day, Goldenstein birdied five and eagled six to get to -1 in her opening six holes. She added a birdie on nine to hit the turn at -2 and went clean on the back side to end the day with a 70 (-2), just four strokes behind Georgia's Jillian Hollis in the individual standings.
Teammate Madison Thomas offset a double bogey on five with a birdie on six, and hit the turn at +1. Following a bogey and two more birdies on the back side, that's where the junior would finish her day, with a 73 (+1). Her 73 has her tied for 13th in the 87 player field with two rounds still to play.
Sydney Colwill is just outside the top 20 at the end of her first round. Colwill hit the turn at -1 with pair of birdies on the front side. After a bogey on nine, she birdied back-to-back holes on 11 and 12 to go to -3, but ran in to trouble on 16 and 17, doubling both holes to go back over par. A bogey on 18 closed her day and her first round 74 (+2) has her tied for 21st overall through 18 holes.
Freshman Julia Matzat's first round on the team entry counted in the day one score. After finishing her first nine holes at +1, Matzat battled doubles on 11, 16 and 17 that pushed her to +8. But the freshman closed the day with momentum, birdying 18 to close with a 79 (+7).
Michaela Fletcher rounded out the Memphis entries with a first round 80. The junior was one of three Lady Tigers to double 17, which pushed her to +8 for the day.
Memphis' 296 tied with host Augusta for fifth in the team standings. Georgia fired a 281 (-7) to take the day one lead. Number 47 ranked Virginia Tech is second with a 298 (+5), while No. 21 ranked Purdue, the defending tournament champions, fired a 294 (+6) for third. Central Arkansas is fourth with a 295.
The second round of the event will be contested on Saturday. The second round will also utilize tee times, and Memphis will be paired with players from Central Arkansas and Augusta. Memphis players will begin teeing off of hole one at 10:15 am (ET).
