CHARLESTON, S.C. – University of Memphis junior Leighton Dempster competed in the air rifle discipline at the 2018 NCAA Rifle Championships Saturday. The Citadel hosted the two-day NCAA event.
Dempster shot a 587 and placed 29th overall. The Loranger, La., native posted a score just below her season average (589.7) heading into the NCAA Championships. She posted a 591 or higher air rifle score eight times in 2017-18, including a career-best 593 on three occasions.
"Leighton shot a great match under difficult circumstances and distractions," said head coach Dan Hermsmeier. "She stuck to her match plan and gave her best effort."
Dempster is the first Tiger to shoot as an individual in the air rifle discipline at the NCAA Championships since Hermsmeier did so, finishing fifth overall. In the 2014 Tigers' run to a fourth-place team finish, Beth Lee advanced to the air rifle final and placed eighth. Former standout Beth Tidmore won the NCAA air rifle title in 2005.
Levi Clark, Dempster's teammate, placed sixth in the smallbore discipline at the NCAA Championships Friday.
