Feb 26, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Memphis wins its first road game at Temple in program history
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team made history Monday evening as it finished the 2017-18 regular season with a 83-78 overtime road victory at Temple. It was the first time Memphis defeated Temple in Philadelphia in program history. The Tigers end the regular season with a 10-19 overall record and 5-11 mark in American Athletic Conference play.
Â
How It Happened
Temple took an early 6-0 lead with back-to-back three-pointers on its opening possessions. Memphis responded and came within one on multiple occasions in the first quarter. Despite struggling from the field in the first quarter, Memphis went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and outrebounded the Owls 11-7.
Â
Temple built its first half lead back up to eight with 4:05 left on the clock, but an 8-0 over the span of two minutes tied up the game at 30-30. Memphis hit a pair of lay-ups and went 4-for-4 from the line during the run. Temple finished the half with a free throw and a made basket to take a three-point, 33-30, lead.
Â
The Owls opened up the second half on another run, this time a 7-0 streak to go up 10 over the visiting Tigers. Memphis once again had an answer and cut the deficit down to one with 5:43 on the clock.
Â
Trailing three with 4:01 to play in regulation, Taylor Barnes knocked down a Memphis three-pointer to tie up the contest for the fourth time. Memphis proceeded to take its first lead of the contest with just over two minutes to play and held on to the lead until Temple hit a three-pointer to tie it with five seconds on the clock. Memphis had the opportunity for the win, but the lay-up in traffic rimed out.
Â
After giving up the first basket of the overtime period, Memphis hit a three-pointer to go up for the final time with 4:27 remaining. The closest Temple would come was one before Brea Elmore sealed the deal with her second three of the contest with just over a minute to play.
Â
Turning Point
In a game with many swings, the first turning point for the Tigers was a 9-0 run to cut a 10-point Temple lead down to one in the third quarter. Then, with 4:01 remaining in regulation, Taylor Barnes knocked down a three-pointer to tie up the contest for the fourth time. The only other time in the contest Memphis trailed was after the first basket in the overtime period. Cheyenne Creighton knocked down her second three-pointer of the game with 4:27 left in overtime to put Memphis up for good.
