Memphis part of 15-team field that includes Georgia, TCU
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's golf team opens the spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
The Tigers will be part of a 15-team field that includes Georgia and TCU.
"It's a new event for us and a good place to get started," said Tiger coach Blake Smart.
Newcomers Brad Bawden and Jordan Even, who joined the program in the fall, will participate, as will Borja Martin, Rodi Vlasveld and Chase Harris.
Bawden, from Hockley, England, played in all five fall events and posted three top 20 finishes. At the Quail Valley Intercollegiate in October, he fired a second-round 66 and ended with the tournament at 12-under 204.
Even, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, played in three fall tournaments and had his best finish – a tie for ninth – at the Memphis Intercollegiate.
Martin, from San Sebastian, Spain, also had his best fall result at the Memphis Intercollegiate, where he tied for 17th. He played in all five fall events.
Vlasveld, from The Netherlands, participated in all the fall tournaments and had two top 20 finishes, including a tie for 16th at the Shoal Creek Invitational. At Shoal Creek, Vlasveld fired a 1-under 71 during his final round.
Harris, a junior from Jackson, Tenn., also played all five fall events and had his best result at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate at Vero Beach, Fla. Harris closed 69-69 to move into a tie for 15th at 6-under 210.
"The forecast looks really good, which is exciting," Smart said. "It'll be in the low-70s."
Smart said he likes the youth on his squad and added "they've done a lot of good work over the break and the buy-in out of this group is really, really high.
"It's been a lot of fun to be around them every day. From a coach-ability standpoint, this group is the best group I've been around (in 14 seasons). It's a thoughtful group of kids that is checking all the boxes and a group that matches my personality."
Smart said Bawden is "by far the most talented guy, but hasn't quite put it all together yet. If he plays like he did at Quail Valley, where he finished second at a strong event, if he's that guy, he makes us dynamic."
Smart and the Tigers won't have much time to analyze what occurs at Hilton Head, S.C. They'll quickly turn around and play at the Palmetto Invitational March 5 and 6 at Aiken, S.C.
