Women’s Basketball Falls To ECU On The Road
Feb 14, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Three players score in double-digits, led by Elmore’s 21 points
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team was unable to overcome a fourth-quarter surge by ECU Wednesday evening and ultimately fell by a score of 75-62 at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C. Memphis had three players in double-figures, led by Brea Elmore's 21 points.
How It Happened
The contest was very back-and-forth for three quarters as there proved to be 13 lead changes in the game. Three of the five ties in the game came in the first quarter and Elmore helped ignite the Memphis offense with four of the team's 11 points.
Trailing by four after the opening quarter, Memphis put together a 4-0 run for the fourth tie of the ball game to start the second. ECU answered and held on to its lead for the remainder of the half. A lay-up by Brianna Porter with 34 seconds before intermission made it just a one-point, 32-31, game with two quarters to play.
Memphis regained the lead from ECU with a 6-2 run out of the break. Much like the rest of the contest, the Pirates had an answer and took back the lead with less than three minutes before the end of the period. That ultimately was the final lead change of the ball game.
Back-to-back three-pointers by ECU to open up the fourth quarter saw the home team's lead grow to eight with over nine minutes to play. ECU continued to build upon its momentum and lead over the Tigers as time progressed. Before the contest ended, Elmore eclipsed the 20-point mark and Cheyenne Creighton registered her 10th double-double of the year.
Turning Point
Back-to-back three-pointers to open up the fourth quarter ignited a 26-point fourth for ECU. Memphis scored 17 points in the fourth, but was unable to overcome the hot start to the period for the Pirates.
