Rifle's Dorey Has Career Match At Ole Miss

Tigers' performances continue to climb in second half of the season.

OXFORD, Miss. – If the goal is to peak heading into the postseason, then the University of Memphis rifle team is on schedule with their recent performances, including Sunday's match at Ole Miss.

Tigers freshman Matt Dorey and sophomore Abby Votava both posted career-best scores in Sunday's match against the Rebels. It is the third in as many matches in the spring portion of the schedule that a Memphis shooter had a career performance.

Ole Miss edged Memphis 4650-4648 in the match. The Tigers took the smallbore discipline 2297-2294, but the Rebels bounced back to win air rifle 2356-2351.

Dorey recorded career-bests across the board in smallbore (580), air rifle (589) and aggregate (1169). Votava had career-highs in air rifle (589) and aggregate (1152).

Putting up career marks has become a trend for the Tigers in the New Year. In the Tigers' first match of 2018 on Jan. 20, sophomore Amberlie Ezell has career marks in smallbore and aggregate, and Dempster posted a career-best air rifle score. The next week versus Kentucky Jan. 27, it was freshman Adriana Hickerson with career-highs in both disciplines and aggregate, and Ezell tied her career-best air rifle score.

Tigers Tidbits

The Tigers' 4648 aggregate was the team's third-best of the season. Memphis has shot three of its top four team aggregate scores the last three matches.
Matt Dorey's 1169 aggregate tied for the highest on the team this season. Sophomore Amberlie Ezell shot a 1169 aggregate at the Jan. 20 Withrow Invitational.
Dorey's 1169 aggregate was the third time in the last four outings he shot 1160 or higher.
Abby Votava improved her career-best aggregate by 10 points with a 1152 versus Ole Miss. Her previous-best aggregate was a 1142 against Kentucky last season, and that Memphis-Kentucky match was held in Oxford.
Junior Leighton Dempster came within a point of tying her career-high air rifle mark of 593 (592 vs. Ole Miss Sunday). It was the seventh time this season Dempster shot 591 or higher in the discipline. In her previous two seasons, she shot 591 or higher in air rifle only once.
Sophomore Levi Clark tied his season-best in air rifle with a 583. Clark's 1163 aggregate was his second-highest of the season.
Dorey was the lone Tiger to finish in the top-five of both disciplines (2^nd, smallbore/4^th, air rifle) in the match versus Ole Miss.
Dorey posted the match's top aggregate score (1169).
Dempster had the Tigers' best air rifle mark (592) in Sunday's match and placed second overall.
