DAYTON, Ohio – Memphis' women's tennis team capped the weekend on a strong note, as the Tigers downed the Wright State Raiders by a final of 5-2 on Sunday morning.
The Tigers (5-3) logged their second win in as many days after sweeping Miami (OH) on Saturday afternoon.
Memphis fell behind early in the doubles point, but rallied to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers then turned in four straight-set victories in singles to seal the win.
"Today was a good day for the Tigers. We competed hard and I was proud of the girls," head coach Hayden Perez said. "Credit to Wright State in the doubles, they came out with a lot of energy and were aggressive. We found ourselves down early and were able to battle back. It was an important and hard-fought doubles point."
The Raiders opened doubles play with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot, but #54-ranked duo Hanna Sohn and Katherine Cao evened the point with a 6-2 win at the top spot. Tiger tandem Claire Sullivan and Josephine Cao sealed the point by taking Court 3 by a final of 6-3.
In singles play, Memphis continued the momentum as Katherine Cao won 6-1, 6-2 on Court 6. Playing at the No. 2 position for the first time this season, Wind followed with her third-straight singles match victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
Freshman Bente provided the match-clinching point with a 6-1, 6-3 win on Court 3, while Sohn set the Tigers' final score by taking the top spot 6-0, 7-5.
"In singles, I was proud of our focus considering this was the third match of the weekend," Perez said. "We were able to stay intense and finish on a strong note."
Memphis will travel to Columbia, Mo., next weekend for a neutral site match against Minnesota followed by its third SEC match of the season with a showdown against host Missouri.
