OXFORD, Ohio – Following a tough setback to start the road trip, the Memphis women's tennis team responded with a 5-0 shutout against Miami University on Saturday afternoon.
"After a tough loss on Thursday, I was hoping we would respond like this," head coach Hayden Perez said of the victory. "The girls continued playing some great doubles, and we are really tough there. In singles, we have some things to work on, and everyone was able to do that today. We are looking forward to another great effort tomorrow as we wrap up the weekend."
Memphis (4-3) struck quickly by sweeping the doubles point. Claire Sullivan and Josephine Cao started the charge with a 6-3 win on Court 3. Duo Anki Wind and Laura Bente took the top spot and clinched the point with a 6-3 win, while #54-ranked tandem Hanna Sohn and Katherine Cao completed the sweep by taking the No. 2 position by a 6-2 final.
The momentum continued in singles as Wind was first off the court. The senior tallied her fifth singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Freshman Laura Bente rebounded from her last outing with a straight-set win at the No. 2 spot to push the Tiger lead to 3-0. Bente improved her singles record to 4-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Sophomore Josephine Cao provided the match-clinching win for Memphis at the No. 5 position. She claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win to secure the Tigers' first true road win of the season. Senior Hanna Sohn battled through a third-set tiebreak for a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 win at the top spot to set the 5-0 final.
Memphis returns to the court Sunday at 9 a.m. to face the Wright State Raiders (3-4) in Dayton, Ohio. The Raiders are led by senior Karoline Haller, who was named the Horizon League player of the week after a pair of singles wins last weekend. The Tigers won the lone meeting between the two schools, a 7-0 triumph in Dayton in 2012.
