Darrell Henderson Named a Player to Watch
Feb 01, 2018 | Football
Rising junior back was the first since Curtis Steele in 2009 to rush for 1,000 yards.
MEMPHIS – Darrell Henderson is one of six running backs on the Touchdown Club of Columbus' list of 2018 Players to Watch, earning him an invitation to the 63rd Touchdown Club of Columbus Awards on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Express Live! in Columbus, Ohio.
Henderson became the first Tiger since 2009 to post a 1,000 yard rushing season, finishing 2017 with 130 rushes for 1,154 yards and nine touchdowns. Henderson, who missed the Tigers' game against Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl due to injury, finished 36th in the country with 1,154 yards and earned second team all-conference honors.
One of six running backs on the Touchdown Club's list this year, Henderson is joined on the list by Oklahoma State's Justice Hill, Florida Atlantic's Devin Singletary, Kentucky's Benny Snell, Jr., Boise State's Alexander Mattison and Iowa State's David Montgomery.
The Touchdown Club of Columbus will also recognize former Tiger wide receiver Anthony Miller at the Feb. 17th event. Miller was named the winner of the organization's award for the top receiver in the country, the Paul Warfield Award. That award is also scheduled to be presented at the awards dinner.
Henderson, who will be a junior this fall, is one of three running backs returning to the Tiger roster who saw significant playing time last season. Patrick Taylor, also a rising junior, and redshirt junior Tony Pollard, who was also used as a receiver last season, all return this fall. Memphis will also have Memphians Tim Taylor (East) and Marquavius Weaver (Bartlett) and Nashville's Deandre Alexander on the roster in the fall after redshirting this past season.
