Academic Records Set In 2017 Fall Semester

Memphis Athletics posts ninth-straight semester of 3.0 or higher GPA.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – And the beat goes on for University of Memphis Athletics in the classroom – another semester, more records set.
For the fourth-consecutive semester, the nearly 400 Tigers student-athletes out-did themselves again in posting a school-record 3.24 grade-point average (GPA) for the fall of 2017. Memphis Athletics recorded a then-school record 3.19 GPA in the 2017 spring semester.

It is the ninth-straight semester and 12 of the last 14 semesters that Tigers student-athletes posted a 3.0 GPA or higher. Fifteen of the athletics department's 17 teams recorded a 3.0 GPA or higher.
"We are proud of our student-athletes and their commitment to excel academically despite incredible time management challenges," said Dr. Bob Baker, Director of the University's Center for Athletic Academic Services (CAAS). "It was another impressive semester in the classroom by our student-athletes, and Tiger Nation has much to be proud of with how our student-athletes perform both in the classroom and their arenas of competition."
In addition, Memphis Athletics set nine other semester GPA records. Among those records were highest GPA for baseball, football, men's basketball and women's basketball.

In the 2016-17 academic year, Memphis Athletics set 11 total GPA records, including nine in the fall of 2016. The following are other academic highlights from the 2017 fall semester:

The Memphis cheer and pom squads also had a great 2017 fall semester in the classroom. The two teams combined for six with 4.0 GPA, 25 on the Dean's List and 42 in the Tiger 3.0 Club. The cheer and pom squads increased their numbers on all three lists from the 2017 spring semester.
The Memphis Athletics Department had 25 student-athletes earn their degrees and participate in 2017 fall commencement Dec. 17. The University's 2018 spring semester begins Jan. 16.

- Nearly 70 percent (272 total; 69 percent) of student-athletes earning Tiger 3.0 Club honors
- 166 Dean's List student-athletes
- 39 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA
- Nearly 75 percent (75 total; 74 percent) of freshmen student-athletes earning Tiger 3.0 Club honors
- 52 Dean's List freshmen student-athletes
- Male student-athlete GPA improving for third-straight semester (2.998, 2016 fall; 3.01, 2017 spring; 3.14, 2017 fall)
- Freshmen GPA improving for second-straight semester (3.201, 2017 spring; 3.34, 2017 fall)
- Football setting GPA record for second-consecutive semester (2.73, 2017 spring; 2.86, 2017 fall)
- Men's soccer setting GPA record for second-consecutive semester (3.57, 2017 spring; 3.60, 2017 fall)Â
