Track And Field Sets Two School Records This Weekend

Chavez in 200 meters, men's 4x400 relay post school marks.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Cera Chavez and the Tigers men's 4x400 meter relay set school records to pace the University of Memphis track and field team's effort at the 2018 Vanderbilt Invitational this weekend.
Chavez placed fourth in the women's 200 meters in a school-record time of 24.08. Her time edged the previous school record of 24.09 set by Kala Funderburk in 2013.
The men's 4x400 meter relay of Davon DeMoss, Ryan Champlin, Sir Netwon Lee and Jarred Pasley wrapped up Saturday's action with a fourth-place finish in the event with a time of 3:10.53. The relay team's time shattered the previous school record by nearly 2.5 seconds. The previous mark of 3:13.19 was set at Memphis' first indoor meet of the 2017-18 season (Vanderbilt Opener/Dec. 2, 2017).

- Cera Chavez set her second school record in as many meets in the 2017-18 indoor season. She ran a school-record 7.39 in the women's 60 meters at the Dec. 2 Vanderbilt Opener.
- This weekend's 200 meters mark by Chavez is her overall third school record. She ran a school-record 23.32 in the outdoor 200 meters at the 2017 Memphis Invitational last April.
- Saturday's 4x400 meter relay broke the previous mark that was set Dec. 2, 2017. That Dec. 2 relay team broke the mark by the relay at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships (3:13.55).
- Ryan Champlin, Sir Netwon Lee and Jarred Pasley all ran on both 4x400 meter relays that set school records this season.
- The men's distance medley relay was the Tigers' only first-place finisher this weekend. The quartet of Brock Ballard, Jarred Pasley, Matthew Viveiros and Matthew Kamph placed first in a time of 10:13.73.
- Junior Nicole Lawson posted a personal-best 39-8 (12.09m) in the women's triple jump. Her previous-best was 39-6 (12.04m) at the Dec. 2 Vanderbilt Opener.
- Freshman DeeNia McMiller threw a personal-best 48-2.5 (14.69m) in the women's shot put.
- Freshman Parker Evans threw a personal-best 49-4.5 (15.04m) in the weight throw.
- Freshman Calvin Austin competed in his first collegiate meet Saturday and placed sixth in the men's 60 meters (6.76). He ran a 6.73 in the 60-meters preliminaries.
- Sophomore Irmi Persiado also ran in his first meet as a Tiger Saturday. He was 23rd in the men's 60 meters (6.97) and 10th in the men's 200 meters (22.09).
- Freshman Hannah Pettigrew ran in her first collegiate meet Saturday, competing in the women's 3000 meters.
