Men's tennis hosts Indiana to open spring play

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Coming off a strong fall season, Memphis men's tennis opens spring dual match play as it hosts Indiana Saturday evening.
First serve from the Racquet Club of Memphis is set for 6 p.m. and admission is free.
The Tigers return a veteran lineup with all nine from last season's roster back for the 2018 spring slate, including seniors Kai Lemke, Shakeel Manji, Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson.
Juniors Chris Patzanovsky and Felix Rauch along with sophomores Jan Pallares, Matt Story and Turner Voges seek to build upon last season's success, while sophomore transfer and Memphis native Marshall Sullivan will make his Tiger debut.
"It's always an exciting time of the year to get the season going," head coach Paul Goebel said. "We worked really hard last fall and had some really good results. The guys all look like they practiced a lot over the break, which is always good to see."
The Hoosiers of Indiana also bring a seasoned and talented roster to Memphis, returning eight players from last year's squad. The Hoosiers (2-0) bested Ball State and Eastern Illinois by finals of 6-1 and 7-0, respectively, Monday in Bloomington.
Although Indiana holds a 3-1 series lead against the Tigers, Memphis won the previous meeting with a 4-1 victory in Bloomington last season.
"We're ready to see how we are going to do against a really tough opponent in Indiana. They are returning all of their players except for one," Goebel said. "They are a very experienced team and had a lot of great results last year. It should be an exciting and hard-fought first match of the year."
