PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Arnica Zitting has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is Zitting's first conference weekly honor of her career.
The Tigers senior made program history Saturday, becoming the first female runner to win the annual season-opening Brooks Twilight Classic. Zitting placed first in a time of 18:01.43 and led the women's squad to a fifth-place finish. This was the 15th year the Brooks Twilight Classic was run.
The first-place performance was Zitting's best of her career. Her previous-best finish was fourth at the 2016 Rhodes College Invitational. Her previous-best performance at the Brooks Twilight Classic came her freshman campaign in 2014, placing ninth.
Last season, the St. Charles, Mo., native finished 16th at the American Athletic Conference Championships. She helped lead the Tigers to a third-place finish, marking the best women's team performance at a conference event in program history.
As a sophomore at Arkansas State in 2015, Zitting earned All-Sun Belt Conference third team honors with her 12th-place finish at the league championships.
