Women’s Tennis Wins Five Singles Matches Saturday

MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team won three of its five singles matches in third set tiebreakers in the final day of the Mizzou Invitational, Saturday. The singles wins came after Memphis had gone 0-3 in doubles play against a lineup from host Missouri to start the morning.
Facing the number 32 ranked doubles team in the country, the pairing of Hanna Sohn and Laura Bente fell 6-3 to start the morning. Both would bounce back in their respective singles matches to get wins, including Sohn's 6-4, 3-0 (retired) win over #102 ranked Fatima Bizhukova at one singles. Bente won her match at three with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 victory over Gabriele Porubin of Wichita State.
Lina Hohnold and Josephine Cao were edged 7-5 in doubles, but Hohnold came back from a first set loss at two singles against Marta Belluco to win 6-2, 10-8. Jo Cao fell in her singles match, 6-2, 6-2, to Ellie Wright of Missouri at five singles.
Katherine Cao and Claire Sullivan were also downed in doubles, falling 6-3. Kat Cao came back from a 7-5 first set loss to win her second set and tiebreaker, 6-2, 10-6, while Sullivan was up 5-2 in her opening singles set at six when her opponent, Wichita State's Ting-Ya Hsu, retired.
Women's tennis now has a break from competition before stepping back on the court in Birmingham, Alabama, in the Samford Invitational.
