Tigers Take Fifth at Memphis Intercollegiate

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Behind scoring rounds of 295, 286, and 298, the Memphis Tigers placed fifth of 13 teams at the 2017 Memphis Intercollegiate, hosted at Colonial Country Club.
Memphis' three-round score of 879 put them 15 strokes over par for the 54 holes. Middle Tennessee State won the tournament with a three-round score of 868, while Arkansas State finished a stroke behind at 869. Little Rock (872) and Western Kentucky (873) took third and fourth in the strong field. Georgetown (881), UT Martin (883), Stetson (892), Fort Wayne (898), Belmont (901), Western Carolina (910), IUPUI (917), and Tennessee State (926) rounded out the 13 teams in the field.
Freshman Borja Martin was the top individual scoring finisher for the Tigers on the day, finishing with a one-under 71 on the par-72, 7,235-yard home course. Starting on the first hole, Martin opened the day with three consecutive pars, before a birdie dropped him to a stroke under par. Over his next six holes he had four pars, a bogey, and a double-bogey, puhsing him two strokes above par. He had three birdies in a five-hole span in the middle of the back nine, before ending his round with a bogey and par, finishing at his collegiate best round of 71. His three-round total of 219 (+3) is tied for 17th in the field.
Brad Bawden was the second-highest scoring finisher, as he finished three shots over par. He had three bogeys over the 18 holes, with 15 more pars for his round of 75. He had a three-round total of 219 - tied with Martin - and also tied for 17th.
Nick Giles had a similar round to Bawden, where Giles had consistency with 14 pars and just four bogeys, finishing the round with a four-over 76. Over his three rounds he had 226 strokes, which was tied for 21st.
Chase Harris had the team's fourth-best score in the third round with a four-over 76. He opened his day with a birdie on the the par-five first hole, and had 12 pars and five bogeys over the final 17 holes to close his day at four shots over par. Harris' three-round total was a 227, which tied for 43rd overall in the field.
Rodi Vlasveld finished with a final-round 78, including four birdies and eight pars. Over the two days, Vlasveld finished four shots over par with a 220, tied for 21st.
Playing as an individual, junior Jordan Even had the team's highest overall individual finish, tying for 9th with a three-round 216, including a three-under 69 in the tournament's final round.
Colin Dubnik finished 10 strokes over par over the two days, and his 226 total score saw him in a tie for 37th overall.
Mikko Kauniskangas was the team's final individual finisher with rounds of 77, 74, and 78 for a three-round 229, tying for 48th.
The Tigers return to action on September 25 and 26 when the team travels to Birmingham, Alabama, to compete in the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate hosted by UAB.
