Tandem helped lead Tigers to Memphis Invitational title.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Natale Zanellato and Brianna Kadiku both were named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. It is the first conference weekly honor for both.
Zanellato and Kadiku are the second and third Tigers players, respectively, to receive the recognition this season. Freshman Alyssa Kronberg earned the weekly honor roll accolade following Memphis' season-opening weekend in late August.
The Zanellato-Kadiku tandem played a huge role in leading the Tigers to the 2017 Memphis Invitational title this past weekend. Memphis posted wins over Louisiana Monroe, Nicholls and UT Martin in the two-day home tournament. The Memphis Invitational also was the team's home opener, as the Tigers started their 2017 schedule with three-straight, in-season tournaments on the road.
A redshirt freshman from Vienna, Va., Zanellato was named to the Memphis Invitational All-Tournament Team. She logged 35 kills in the weekend's three matches (11.7 kills/match) and had a .351 hitting percentage. Zanellato posted double-figures kills in all three matches, extending her streak to four-straight with double-digit kills.
Her 14 kills in the Memphis Invitational championship match victory over UT Martin was her second-highest output of the campaign. She had 17 kills versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Lady Techster Invitational Sept. 9.
For the season, Zanellato is third on the team with 87 kills. She ranks 19th in the league with her 87 kills. She also has 26 digs and 11 total blocks.
Kadiku, a middle blocker from Cedar Hill, Texas, was credited with 16 total blocks (5.3 blocks/match) in the three wins. She had a season-high seven total blocks in the victory over Louisiana Monroe Sept. 15. Kadiku also registered 22 kills and seven digs over the weekend. She had 10 kills and five total blocks in the win over Nicholls and eight kills and four total blocks versus UT Martin.
She leads the team and American Athletic Conference in number of total blocks (48.0). Her 1.09 blocks-per-set average is seventh in the league, and she has four or more total blocks in eight matches this season. Kadiku also is ranked fifth in the conference in hitting percentage (.330).
Kadiku is fourth on the team in kills (86) and leads the squad with her .330 hitting percentage. She also has 18 digs.
The Tigers return to action this weekend when they open American Athletic Conference action on the road. Memphis plays at Connecticut Friday, Sept. 22, before moving to Philadelphia, Pa., to face Temple Sunday, Sept. 24.
