Volleyball Posts 3-0 Win Over UT Martin Friday

Bierria's 11 kills, Marlatt's seven blocks lead the Tigers.
CONWAY, Ark. – University of Memphis sophomore Tai Bierria downed a team-high 11 kills, and senior Faith Myers posted a double-double of 17 assists and 14 digs to lift the Tigers volleyball squad to a 3-0 victory over UT Martin Friday afternoon.
The match was part of the Central Arkansas Invitational. The Tigers play a second match against host Central Arkansas later tonight at 7 p.m. (CT).
Memphis improved its record to 1-3. The Skyhawks dropped to 2-3.

Tigers Tidbits
- Tai Bierria registered her 11th double-figures kills match of her career.
- Senior Faith Myers recorded her 18th career double-double with 17 assists and 14 digs. It was her third double-double this season.
- Redshirt sophomore Sarah Marlatt, who set career-highs for kills and digs last weekend, logged a career-best seven total blocks vs. UT Martin. She also had a career-high two aces.
- Freshman Hannah Flowers collected a season-best five total blocks.
- Redshirt freshman Natale Zanellato had a season-best six kills vs. the Skyhawks.
- Senior Regan Comperry split time at setter with Myers and registered 13 assists and five digs.

How It Happened
- Overall Match
- The match was the Tigers' first three-setter of the season.
- Although the match was only three sets, two went into extras, and Memphis won both by identical 28-26 scores.
- The match had 31 ties and 16 lead changes.
- Set One (Memphis 28-26)
- The opening set was close throughout with 13 ties and seven lead changes.
- There were five ties in the opening 16 points, but Memphis then nudged out to a two-point lead at 10-8.
- The Tigers maintained their two-point edge at 12-10 when UT Martin put together a 4-0 run to take a 14-12 advantage.
- Memphis tied the set at 14-all and, after a 15-all tie, pulled out to an 18-16 lead. Kills from Daija Lowe and Hannah Flowers helped the Tigers grab the advantage.
- The Tigers held on to their two-point lead until 23-21 when the Skyhawks went on a 3-0 spurt to take a 24-23 advantage to gain set point on their serve. An attack error, though, tied the set at 24-all.
- Two Flowers kills put Memphis ahead at 27-26 with the serve for the set. Sarah Marlatt's first career service ace sealed the first-set victory.Â
- Set Two (Memphis 25-14)
- The Tigers blew out to an 11-3 lead in the second set and never looked back.
- UT Martin held a 3-2 lead, but Memphis answered with nine-straight points.
- In that run, Tai Bierria, Lowe and Natale Zanellato each logged a kill.
- The Skyhawks pulled to within four at 11-7, but Memphis responded with a 9-3 spurt to take a 20-10 lead. Bierria had four kills, and Marlatt added a kill and her second service ace of the match in the run.
- From there, the Tigers cruised to the set win.
- Set Three (Memphis 28-26)
- Like the opening set, the third was close the entire way with 15 ties and six lead changes.
- The set had six ties in the first 16 points, with the last at 8-all.
- Memphis put together a 4-0 spurt to take a 12-8 advantage. Junior Mady Ruhlman served on all four points and collected one ace in the run.
- After a Bierria kill gave the Tigers a 15-12 lead, UT Martin responded with a 5-2 spurt to knot the score at 17-all.
- The score was tied again at 20-all when the Skyhawks jumped out to a 24-21 lead and were one point from taking the third set.
- UT Martin, however, committed a service error on set point, and a Skyhawks attack error allowed Memphis back in the set at 24-23.
- A Myers kill tied the set at 24-all, and the two squads played back-and-forth volleyball over the next couple of points and were tied at 26-all.
- Bierria's 11th kill of the match gave Memphis a 27-26 lead, and a UT Martin attack error wrapped up the set and match for the Tigers.
