Volleyball Drops Decision To Central Arkansas

Tigers wrap up play in UCA Invitational Saturday.
CONWAY, Ark. – University of Memphis freshman Hannah Flowers logged a match-best 13 kills, and redshirt freshman Natalie Zanellato added 10 kills, but the host Central Arkansas Bears took the win 3-0 Friday night. The Bears won by scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-22.
The match was Tigers' second in the Central Arkansas Invitational Friday. Memphis plays its final match of the tournament against Little Rock Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT).
The Tigers' record now is 1-4. Central Arkansas is 5-0.

- Freshman Hannah Flowers had 13 kills for her third double-figures kills performance in five matches this season.
- Redshirt freshman Natale Zanellato had a season-best 10 kills vs. the Bears. Her previous-best was six kills vs. UT Martin earlier in the day.
- Sophomore Tai Bierria nearly had a double-double with nine kills and nine digs.
- Redshirt sophomore Sarah Marlatt had three total blocks vs. Central Arkansas. In Friday's two matches, she had 10 total blocks.

How It Happened
- Overall Match
- The match was the Tigers' second three-setter of the day and season. Memphis is 1-1 in three-set matches in 2017.
- The match had 23 ties and 11 lead changes.
- Set One (Central Arkansas 25-23)
- The visitors from the Bluff City started strong and jumped out to a 7-1 lead. Natale Zanellato had two kills in the match-opening spurt.
- Memphis increased its advantage to seven (16-9) on a Sarah Marlatt kill, but the home team responded with an 11-3 run to take its first lead of the set at 20-19.
- The Bears extended their lead to three at 22-19 before two Tai Bierria kills cut the advantage to 22-21.
- From there, Central Arkansas held Memphis at bay on its way to the first set victory.
- Set Two (Central Arkansas 25-16)
- The Tigers, once again, pulled out to an early advantage, holding a 7-3 lead on the strength of two Zanellato kills.
- Central Arkansas responded with an 11-4 spurt for a 14-11 lead.
- After a Bierria kill cut the lead to 14-12, the Bears put together another small run to gain some additional breathing room at 20-13.
- Central Arkansas wrapped up the second set with a 5-3 final spurt.
- Set Three (Central Arkansas 25-22)
- Unlike the first two sets, the Bears grabbed an early lead and never trailed. The score was tied 14 times in the final set.
- Central Arkansas led 8-5, but Memphis tied the score eight times over the set's next 27 points. The last tie was at 20-all, and the Tigers did not get a lead.
- Flowers (3 kills), Bierria (2) and Lowe (3) all recorded kills in that span of the set.
- The Bears broke the 20-all tie with three-straight points to take a 23-20 advantage on the way to the set and match victory.
