Overtime Goal Leads Women’s Soccer To 2-1 Victory Over UAB
Aug 27, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Levasseur twins both score in victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A goal with less than one minute remaining in double overtime by junior Marie Levasseur lifted the No. 24 University of Memphis women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over UAB Sunday evening at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The victory lifts the Tigers to a 3-0 record for the second-straight season.
"A win is a win, but we have to finish our chances," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "It wasn't pretty, but you take it. It's tough for the other team as they fought hard. You have to give UAB credit. They made it tough, but we have to do a better job of finishing our chances."
Catherine Levasseur put the Tigers on the board early with a goal in the 6th minute of the contest. Her first goal of the season came after a Memphis corner kick by Jessica Lisi that landed and bounced around the box with a touch by Olivia Gauthier before Levasseur put the finishing touch on it.
Memphis had many opportunities early with seven shots in the first 15 minutes of action.
The Memphis defense held strong early on, not allowing a UAB shot until the 35th minute of the match. It wasn't until the 83rd minute of the match that UAB scored the game-tying goal.
Throughout the remainder of regulation and into the start of overtime, both squads were pressuring each other's defenses. After almost two entire overtime periods of high intensity soccer, the Tigers came out on top with a shot by Marie Levasseur that went through the UAB keeper's legs for the game-winning goal. It was Levasseur's second goal of the season and her second career overtime game-winning goal with the first coming last season against UCF.
Memphis finished the match with 18 shots compared to seven by the Blazers. Goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard finished with three saves including one in overtime to keep the score notched at one.
Memphis returns to action on Sept. 1 against Rhode Island at the Music City Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. The Tigers will play a second match at the invitational against Indiana on Sept. 3.
