Men’s Soccer Suffers Setback To UAB In Home Opener

Tiger unable to overcome first half goals scored by the Blazers
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to long-time rival UAB Sunday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers fall to 0-1-1 to start the 2017 season.
"All the credit goes to UAB," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "There are no questions about it. They dominated for 90 minutes, they capitalized and they took advantage. They were the better team today. That shows you that we have a lot of work to do, but we still have 14 matches in the regular season that we aren't giving up on."
UAB struck first in the 13th minute of the match after a cross through the left side. Philip Makinde finished the shot to give the Blazers a 1-0 edge.
Two more goals in the first half by UAB put the match all but out of reach for the Tigers. Memphis pressured more in the second half, but the Blazer defense put a stop to attacks the Tigers tried to put together.
Jake Leeker finished the match with four saves and Mason Morise and Ben Roberts led the team with two shots apiece. The Tigers finished with seven corners compared to four by the Blazers. Both teams had nine shots in the match.
The Tigers remain at home next weekend for a non-conference match against C-USA foe Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 2. Kick-off on the campus of Christian Brothers University is slated for 7 p.m. For more information on the Memphis men's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisMSoccer. Admission is free for all home matches.
