Tigers junior All-American to throw in women's javelin in Taiwan.
TAIPEI, Taiwan – Ashley Pryke, a rising junior on the University of Memphis track and field squad, competes in the women's javelin at the 2017 World University Games Wednesday, Aug. 23.
Pryke throws at 5:10 a.m. (CT) in the Qualification Group A. The women's javelin final is set for Friday, Aug. 25 at 6:55 a.m. (CT). She qualified for the World University Games in her first meet of the 2017 outdoor season, throwing a then-program record 175-3 (53.41m) at the Rhodes Invitational Mar. 17.
The Peterborough, Ontario native had a tremendous sophomore campaign in 2017, culminating in a third-place (bronze) finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in early June. Pryke threw a school-record 186-9 (56.93m) and earned U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) All-America first team honors.
Pryke became only the second Tigers women's performer to medal at the NCAA Championships – indoor or outdoor. The other Memphis women's athlete to medal was Susan King, who placed second in the women's shot put at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships. In Memphis women's track and field program history (indoor/outdoor), Pryke's third-place finish is second only to King's second-place effort in the 2008 NCAA women's shot put.
In addition to her 2017 NCAA Championships performance, Pryke won the women's javelin crown at the American Athletic Conference Championships in mid-May. She won the title (181-0; 55.18m) by nearly six feet over the second-place finisher. Pryke also placed first in all seven regular-season outdoor meets in 2017.
Pryke's 186-9 (56.93m) throw at the NCAA Championships re-set her own school record for the fourth time in 2017. She set her initial school mark as a freshman (160-10; 49.03m) and then re-set it at the 2017 season-opening Rhodes Invitational (175-3; 53.41m), Arkansas State Red Wolves Open (177-5; 54.09m), American Athletic Conference Championships (181-0; 55.18m) and NCAA Championships.
For her career, Pryke has 13 top-three finishes in the women's javelin, including nine first-place performances.
