Junior goalkeeper earns first weekly honor
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis junior goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard has been named the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week after posting a pair of shutouts in her first two career starts, the league office announced Monday.
Ashworth Shepard made her debut as the Memphis women's soccer starting goalkeeper and recorded back-to-back shutout wins to start the season.
The Tigers opened the season with a 3-0 win over Samford and Ashworth Shepard made her first career start and made five saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board. She was back between the posts on Sunday for another 3-0 win over Little Rock with three more saves.
Junior forward Elizabeth Woerner was named to the league's weekly honor roll after she scored two goals in the opener against Samford. The multiple-goal match was the third of her career.
Memphis will host a matchup of early-season unbeaten teams when it welcomes UAB to Mike Rose Soccer Complex Sunday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m.
