Shutout Victory Leads Women’s Soccer To Weekend Sweep
Aug 20, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Lisi, Levasseur, and Morton score for the first time this season in the victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A goal in the first half and two in the second led the University of Memphis women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Little Rock Sunday evening. The shutout win improves the Tigers to 2-0 in the young season.
"I saw hard work tonight," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "This is a team that is difficult to break down as they are very well coached. They make you frustrated because they are hard to get in behind. I thought our kids just stayed after it and kept working hard."
The Tigers attacked the Trojan defense right away, firing off five shots in the first 15 minutes of the match. In that time, the Memphis defense stifled the Trojans, holding them without a shot until the 33rd minute of the match.
In the 38th minute, sophomore Jessica Lisi scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a rocket shot from outside the box. Her goal was unassisted as she forced a turnover and immediately launched the shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Before the end of the first half the Tigers threatened with another opportunity, but the diving Trojans goalkeeper saved Elizabeth Woerner's shot.
With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, Memphis goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard registered a save in a one-v-one situation, keeping the score in favor of the Tigers 1-0.
The Tigers capitalized once again with a goal by Marie Levasseur in the 74th minute. Her twin sister, Catherine, was credited with the assist on Levasseur's first goal of the season.
An insurance goal in the 84th minute by Mikayla Morton put the finishing touches on the victory for the Tigers. Morton fired her shot from the left side of the pitch off of a nicely placed throw in by Samantha Murphy.
Memphis finished the match with 19 shots while allowing just four by Little Rock. The Tigers also recorded 10 corner kicks while holding Little Rock to just one. Ashworth Shepard tallied three saves for the Tigers and finished the weekend with eight saves.
The Tigers will have the midweek off next week before returning to the Mike Rose Soccer Complex for a doubleheader with the men's squad against UAB. Kick-off for the women's match is slated for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on the Memphis Tiger Network.
