Memphis and Kroger Team Up Again in Fight Against Hunger
Aug 21, 2017 | Football
$5.00 tickets available at local Krogers starting Monday
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis has teamed with participating area Kroger stores to sell $5 football tickets for the Tigers' season opener in support of the "Million Meals Challenge." The tickets, which went on sale at 10 a.m. Monday morning at area Kroger stores, are for the Tigers' season and home opener against UL Monroe, Aug. 31st at 8 p.m. (CT).
In support of the Mid-South Food Bank Million Meals Challenge, the Tigers will offer a special $5 game ticket available exclusively at 36 area Kroger stores. The Tigers will donate $1 from each ticket sold at the Guest Services desks of area Kroger stores to the Mid-South Food Bank.
"For the past five straight seasons, we have partnered with our friends at Kroger to offer $5 tickets," Director of Athletics Tom Bowen said. "This has certainly become a community event and is a way for us to help some of our neighbors in need."
Around 9,000 tickets will be available in local Kroger stores. Every dollar generated by the drive results in three meals, so selling all 9,000 tickets would make 27,000 meals available for the Mid-South Food Bank.
In all, the Mid-South Food Bank serves residents in 31 counties in the Mid-South in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi. In those 31 counties, 19.7 percent of residents are food-insecure and 24 percent live above the poverty line and are not eligible for federal nutrition programs like food stamps. In those 31 counties, there are over 124,000 children who do not know if they will eat today. The Mid-South Food Bank utilizes programs like No Hungry Senior, Kids Cafe, Food for Kids Backpacks, Mobile Pantry and Healthy School Pantry Programs to compact food insecurity. For more information on the programs offered by the Mid-South Food Bank, please visit www.midsouthfoodbank.org.
The effort, combined with Ole Miss and Mississippi State, has provided over one million meals for people in Mississippi and West Tennessee in the past.
There are over 36 Kroger stores across three states and 16 cities selling these special tickets. In previous years, many store locations sold out of their allotment of tickets, so fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets early. Fans looking for premium seats outside of the $5 price locations should contact the Memphis ticket office at 901-678-2331.
