Six Tigers Named Scholar-Athletes
MEMPHIS – For an eighth straight season, the University of Memphis women's tennis team was named an ITA All-Academic team it was announced, Wednesday. In addition to the team award, six individual Tigers earned ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the past academic year.
Both seniors from the 2017 roster earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors: Marta Morga and Gabrielle Paul. Morga becomes the sixth different women's tennis player to earn an ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction for a fourth straight season. She joins Courtney Collins (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013), Andrea Feichtinger (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006), Kelly Gray (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013), Alyssa Hibberd (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), and Dara Toulch (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) as players who posted a 3.5 or higher during the academic year.
Teammate Anki Wind (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) also earned her fourth consecutive honor, but unlike Morga, will be back on the Tiger roster next season after receiving a medical redshirt after suffering a knee injury early in the 2016 spring season. Wind worked her way back from injury and earned American Athletic Conference all-conference honors for a second straight season before suffering another injury in a late season road win, forcing her to miss the AAC tournament. Wind is back in rehab for her knee injury and could be back on the court this coming season for the Tigers.
Hanna Sohn earned her second ITA Scholar-Athlete honor as a Tiger. Sohn, who stepped in at one singles as a sophomore in Wind's absence, also stepped in atop the lineup for Memphis this past season, posting a 15-14 record overall.
Two freshmen rounded out the Memphis honorees among the ITA Scholar-Athletes. Katherine Cao, who led Memphis with a 19-8 overall record in her first collegiate season, and Clara Kuehn, who stepped in to the lineup at six singles late in the season following the injury to Wind, both earned scholar accolades from the ITA.
Sohn and Wind will be the lone returning upperclassmen for a young 2017-18 Lady Tiger roster. Joining the three player sophomore class will be Laura Bente and Lina Hohnold from Germany and Alisha Reayer from Great Britain.
Earlier this summer, the women's tennis team was honored by the American Athletic Conference with its Team Academic Excellence Award as having the top GPA among the league's women's tennis teams. The squad posted the highest team GPA in the athletic department in 2016-17, a 3.80.
Fall classes start at the University of Memphis on Monday, Aug. 28th.
