Tigers Volleyball Preseason Practice Update
Aug 14, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Team closes first week of drills, focuses on Aug. 19 scrimmage.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Seven days are in the books for the University of Memphis volleyball team's 2017 preseason practice, and now the focus gets more intense as the Tigers' first Blue-Gray scrimmage is Saturday, Aug. 19.
Â
Below is a short Q&A with Tigers head coach April Jauregui on the squad's first week of practice.
Â
Q: First week of practice has come and gone. What did you see that you liked?
Â
A: The time we took the first two days working with The Program Athletics is paying off. Our players have been focused, engaged and very competitive in all of our practices. We've made a lot of progress in the first week.
Â
Q: What do you still need to work on?
Â
A: We need to solidify our system more. The past week, we've introduced our offensive and defensive systems. We now need to fine-tune them. That's our next step.
Â
Q: From the sessions with The Program Athletics, you wanted the players to learn how to hold each other accountable. Have you seen that carry over into your practices?
Â
A: Our accountability has been much better than in the past. It's a night-and-day difference, but there is still room to grow. Overall, for the leadership within our team, going through The Program Athletics was an invaluable experience, and we're seeing it pay off.
Â
Q: What are you looking for as the team progresses toward Saturday's Blue-Gray scrimmage?
Â
A: Our players have been competitive in our practices and scrimmages the first week. On Saturday, we want to create a match-like environment to get those jitters out. It's also an opportunity for our newcomers to play in front of our fans.
Â
Q: Anyone or anything stand out in the first week of practice?
Â
A: All of our players have done well the first week. They all came in with the right mindset, and they are making decisions very difficult for us coaches, as we look at potential lineups. Depending on the night, we can use several different factors in determining who plays, and that's a good problem to have.
Â
Q: What are you hoping to see in Saturday's Blue-Gray scrimmage that you can build on?
Â
A: We want to have more of our offensive and defensive systems in place. We don't think it will be perfect by Saturday, but the players are grasping what we're telling them to do. We want to play clean volleyball on both sides of the net Saturday. And, we want a true winner because someone won and not because of mistakes from the other side.
