Memphis football finishes another successful trip to the Lambuth Campus
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers football team wrapped up its three-day trip to Jackson with a scrimmage in front of a great crowd at the University of Memphis Lambuth Campus Saturday in Jackson.
"It was an incredible day," Memphis head coach Mike Norvell said. "Last year was our first trip to Jackson and the opportunity to come to Lambuth and it's been another wonderful week for our guys to grow together. Then today to see all of our Tiger fans up here giving their support and cheering on these young men, its special for us as a staff and an organization."
The Tigers' first-team defense had a good day overall and offensively the depth at running back was on display.
Senior defensive lineman Ernest Suttles made a pair of big plays on defense, recording a sack and batting down a pass attempt.
Sophomore running backs Tony Pollard and Patrick Taylor both had long touchdown runs, while freshman Timothy Taylor also had a good day and managed to find the end zone.
"I saw both sides of the ball competing. The first defense came out and started really fast and very aggressive. There were some guys we held back and had limited work. We wanted to see the young guys play. There were some mistakes made and some communication that has to improve but you got to see some young guys that are really stepping up and elevating their game," Norvell said.
Now at the midway point of fall camp, Memphis will return to campus to continue preparations for the season-opener.
The Tigers open their 2017 season with a special Labor Day weekend/Thursday night game against Louisiana-Monroe Aug. 31. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. (CT) at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
Memphis' season opener is the first of seven home games for the 2017 campaign. Fans have multiple options for purchasing tickets and can do so online at GoTigersGoTix.com or by calling 901-678-2331.
