The men’s and women’s teams announce location changes
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the first time in over 15 seasons, the University of Memphis men's and women's soccer programs will return to campus for a combined four regular season matches in 2017. The men will end the regular season with two matches at the Park Avenue Campus while the women will play two of the final three matches on campus.
Â
"This is an exciting step in bringing our soccer programs back on campus," said University of Memphis Director of Athletics Tom Bowen. "Mike Rose has been a great home for Memphis soccer for more than 15 years, but our ultimate goal is to provide our student-athletes with a home that encompasses all of their needs in one location."
Â
These four contests will mark the first regular season matches on the campus of the University of Memphis since before the 2001 season when the Tigers made the newly-constructed Mike Rose Soccer Complex its permanent residence in 2001. The men will still call Mike Rose home to four regular season matches this year while the women are there for seven contests.
Â
Prior to the move to Mike Rose, both the men's and women's soccer teams claimed Echles Field, a field directly to the east of the Student Recreation and Fitness Center and the Larry O. Finch Building, its home.
Â
"The idea of playing at the Park Avenue Campus has always been exciting to me as it would bring us closer to our students here at the main campus and now it's happening this fall," said men's head coach Richard Mulrooney. "Not only does it finally give us a true home field advantage that the team will thrive off of, but I also believe it's the next step in getting this program to the next level and beyond."
Â
In addition to the changes to the Park Avenue Campus, the Memphis men's contest against Kentucky on Sept. 2 will be played at Christian Brothers University.
Â
"Playing these two games at Park Avenue Campus is the next step to bringing our soccer programs back home for good," women's soccer head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Mike Rose has been a fantastic venue for us and we have had a lot of success out there, but our vision for this program is for our games to be played on campus. We have a new surface and the plan is to have a new grandstand, lights and locker rooms. Once our vision is completed I believe we will have one of the finest facilities in the American Athletic Conference."
Â
Along with the four-regular season matches, the men's and women's teams will play three exhibition games on the Park Avenue pitch.
