Senior offensive lineman among 81 candidates for lineman award
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior offensive lineman Gabe Kuhn has been named to the watch list for the 2017 Outland Trophy, the Football Writers Association of American announced Thursday. Kuhn is one of nine candidates from the American Athletic Conference.
Kuhn has missed just one game in his three-year career at the University of Memphis and has played multiple positions along the offensive line in that span. The Wildwood, Mo. native, started every game at center during his freshman season in 2014. Kuhn then moved to guard as a sophomore in 2015 and following that up by playing in every game in 2016.
He blocked for a 2016 Memphis offense that ranked 14th in the country with 304.4 passing yards per game and 28th in in the country in total offense (463.7 ypg). In his career he has blocked for the three highest scoring offenses in school history, including the 2015 team that set a program record with 522 points scored.
A journalism major, Kuhn has already graduated from the University of Memphis with a bachelors degree and is working on a second degree this fall.
The winner of the 72nd Outland Trophy – named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn at the turn of the 20th century – will be announced live on ESPN at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thurs., Dec. 7. For the third straight year, the show will air from the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
This year's preliminary list includes 24 offensive tackles, 21 defensive tackles, 19 centers and 17 offensive guards. The ACC (17) led all conferences with members on the Watch List, followed by the Big Ten and SEC (11 each), Pac-12 (10), American Athletic (9), Big 12 and Mid-American (6 each), Independents and Mountain West (4 each), Conference USA (2) and Sun Belt (1).
