The Tigers pace the conference for the fourth-straight season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis, for the fourth-straight season, led the American Athletic Conference in Team Academic Excellence Awards as announced by the conference office Tuesday. The Tigers had four teams receive the academic honor, which brings the Memphis overall total to 20 teams in the four-year life of the American.
Â
The four teams to receive the honor from the conference are men's and women's soccer, men's golf, and women's tennis. This is the fourth-straight year women's soccer has received the Team Academic Excellence Award. Men's golf has earned the award in three of the four possible years while women's tennis has two honors to its name. Women's tennis led all Memphis programs with a 3.80 team GPA.
Â
This is the first-time men's soccer has earned the award after leading all Memphis men's programs with a program-best 3.57 GPA.
Â
"Our student-athletes continue to dominate The American in this annual academic excellence/team GPA category and we could not be prouder of these programs, especially men's soccer for earning the award for the first time in program history," said Dr. Bob Baker, Director of the Center for Athletic Academic Services.
Â
The American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards are given to programs with the highest collective grade-point averages in each of the 21 league-sponsored sports. The teams' cumulative GPAs are calculated from each student-athlete that appeared on the roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each sport.
