Senior punter also among nominees for Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior punter Spencer Smith has been named as one of 29 candidates for the 2017 Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation's top collegiate punter, the Augusta Sports Council announced Wednesday.
It was also announced this week that Smith is among 146 nominees for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football. The student-athletes nominated for this esteemed award embody the true spirit of teamwork and selflessness, donating their limited free time to helping and serving others.
Smith is the back-to-back first team All-American Athletic Conference punter and a three-time all-conference punter. He was also recognized on the Ray Guy Watch List in 2015 and 2016.
Last season Smith led The American with a 45.1 punting average on 45 punts for 2,028 total yards. In 13 games, he downed 11 of 45 punts inside the 20-yard line and kicked 13 punts over 50 yards. He had just three touchbacks in 45 punts.
In his career he has punted 146 times for 6,393 yard and an average of 43.8 yards per punt. He has 40 punts over 50 yards and 39 punts downed inside the 20. His career long punt is 72 yards, against Cincinnati in 2015.
First awarded in 2000, former Memphis punter Tom Hornsey was the recipient of the 2013 Ray Guy Award after he had 62 punts for 2,800 yards at an average of 45.32 yards per punt.
