Tigers sophomore earns All-America first team honors.
EUGENE, Ore. – University of Memphis track and field's Ashley Pryke took third place in the women's javelin in second-day action at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships Thursday. The national meet is hosted by the University of Oregon at the Ducks' historic Hayward Field.
Pryke, a sophomore, won bronze with a school-record throw of 186-9 (56.93m). It was the fourth time in the 2017 outdoor campaign that Pryke re-set her own school record. Her previous school-record mark was 181-0 (55.18m), which she set in winning the 2017 American Athletic Conference women's javelin crown in mid-May.
With her third-place performance, Pryke earned U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America first team honors.
Pryke is only the second Tigers women's performer to medal at the NCAA Championships – indoor or outdoor. The other Memphis women's athlete to medal was Susan King, who placed second in the women's shot put at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships. In Memphis women's track and field program history (indoor/outdoor), Pryke's third-place finish is second only to King's second-place effort in the 2008 NCAA women's shot put.
In Thursday action, Pryke jumped into the top-three on her third and final attempt of the event's opening round. She threw her school-record 186-9 (56.93m) on that third attempt. As a result of placing among the top-nine in the opening round, Pryke moved to the women's javelin finals with three additional throws. However, none of her last three attempts were better than her 186-9 (56.93m) mark.
Pryke's javelin action continues this summer when she travels to Taiwan to compete in the 2017 World University Games in mid-to-late August. She qualified for the World University Games with her first mark of the outdoor season at the 2017 Rhodes Invitational in mid-March.
On the first day of action at the 2017 NCAA Championships Wednesday, junior Michael Criticos placed 13th in the men's javelin (226-7; 69.06m) and earned USTFCCCA All-America second team distinction. His 226-7 throw was a season-best.
