Ferguson, Mayhue and Miller heading to academy in Louisiana.
MEMPHIS – A trio of Memphis football players will head to the Manning Passing Academy, held Thursday through Sunday at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Senior quarterback Riley Ferguson and senior wide receivers Phil Mayhue and Anthony Miller will join the staff at the Academy, now celebrating its 22nd anniversary.
"I'm just ready to go up there and learn," Ferguson said. I know there's going to be a lot of talented quarterbacks there from around the country and I'm going to go and learn from them."
Ferguson is preparing for his senior campaign after guiding the Memphis offense last year to the tune of 3,698 yards and a school-record 32 touchdowns. Ferguson ranked second in the American Athletic Conference with 284.5 passing yards per game and a 152.7 passer efficiency rating. His 3,698 yards in 2016 ranked 11th in the NCAA and ranked second in the Memphis record book only to Paxton Lynch's 2015 mark, missing Lynch's mark by just 78 yards despite missing most of the game at Cincinnati due to injury.
"It's unbelievable," Ferguson said of the invite to the academy. "I'm ready to go and learn as much as I can. I'm going to be a sponge and just soak up everything they say to me, anything they try to correct or tell me I can do better, I'm going to listen."
Ferguson will be taking two familiar targets to the camp with him. Anthony Miller, a member of the 2016 Biletnikoff Award Watch List (presented to the outstanding receiver), and Phil Mayhue have also been invited to the camp to work with upcoming quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends.
Miller was named a pre-season All-American by Athlon Sports on Thursday as well, earning fourth team honors after a 95-catch, 1,434 yard season as a junior. The 1,434 yards shattered the single season receiving yards record at Memphis established by NFL great Isaac Bruce and Miller and Bruce and Miller are the only two Tigers in Memphis history to record a 1,000 yard receiving season.
"I'm just going to go and try to have a little fun, but at the same time, it's going to be time to work," Miller said. "We have to go and perform."
Mayhue will head in to his senior campaign with a consecutive-games-with-a catch-stretch of 28 games, tied for second in school history. As a junior, Mayhue, like Miller, a walk-on to the Tiger roster, finished with a career-best 677 receiving yards, with four touchdowns. In three years and 38 career games, he has 108 catches for 1,589 yards and seven touchdowns, including a career-best game in the win over #18/21 Houston to end the regular season last year, finishing with 142 yards and two touchdowns.
