Junior earns second consecutive league honor.
MEMPHIS – Junior men's tennis player Ryan Peniston is one of six players in the American Athletic Conference named to the all-conference singles team it was announced Thursday. Peniston was joined on the squad by American co-Players of the Year Sasha Gozun (USF) and Constantin Schmitz (Tulane), Korey Lovett (UCF), Or Ram-Harel (Tulsa) and Ronald Slobodchikov (SMU).

This is the second consecutive season Peniston, who was also ranked number 82 in the country in the latest ITA rankings released Thursday afternoon, has earned all-conference honors. He was also a first team honoree last season.

The American Athletic Conference had 11 players ranked in the top 125 of the latest poll with the top six players in the rankings earning all-conference honors.

"Ryan has show great improvement and consistency this season," Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "From winning regionals in the fall to leading our team at the number one position in the spring, he is very deserving of this honor."

Peniston was 17-12 overall for Memphis so far this season with the NCAA tournament still to come. The junior was 8-8 at one singles and teamed with Felix Rauch for a 13-6 record at two doubles during the spring, including a 3-0 mark against ranked opponents. The singles champion for the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, Peniston qualified for a pair of national ITA events this season, the ITA Indoor Championships and the Oracle ITA Master's event in Malibu, California.

Peniston becomes the sixth different Tiger to earn all-conference honors from the American in the league's fourth season and the second to do so in multiple seasons. Connor Glennon (2014, 2015), Kai Lemke (2015), David O'Hare (2014), Joe Salisbury (2014), Andrew Watson (2015) all also earned all-conference honors in singles and/or doubles during their respective careers. Watson, who plays two singles and one doubles for the Tigers currently, was also named the American's Freshman of the Year in 2014.

Memphis will continue its regular season next week with its fifth NCAA appearance in six seasons. Memphis will face Oregon in first round action at the College Station regional. The two teams will face off at 11 a.m. (CT), Friday, May 12th. The winner of that match then faces the winner of the Texas A&M and Buffalo match on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of the College Station regional advances to the national championship site at the University of Georgia for the Round of 16, May 20th.
