Freshman set school record in 200 meters, won three events last weekend.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Cera Chavez has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
It is fourth time this outdoor season a Tigers track and field performer has earned a weekly honor from the conference. Ashley Pryke (women's javelin) received the league's Female Field Athlete of the Week twice (Mar. 21, Apr. 25), and Jordan Wesner (men's high jump) took home the conference's Male Field Athlete of the Week accolade Mar. 28.
Chavez, a freshman sprinter, set a school record and was a triple-winner at this past weekend's Memphis Invitational. She broke a 36-year-old record in winning the women's 200 meters Apr. 28 and then followed with two additional first-place performances in the women's 100 meters (11.45) and the women's 4x400 meter relay (3:45.47) Apr. 29.
The Los Lunas, N.M., native ran a school-record 23.32 in the women's 200 meters, breaking the previous mark of 23.36. The previous record of 23.36 was set by Wanda Hooker in 1981.
Last weekend's 200 meters was her third run in the event this outdoor season. In her three appearances, Chavez cut nearly .70 seconds off her time. Chavez began the campaign with a 24.00 at Southeast Missouri's Joey Haines Invitational Apr. 1 and improved to 23.75 at Alabama's Crimson Tide Invitational Apr. 8.
Chavez nearly made it a sweep of the 100 and 200 meters school records. She posted a personal-best time of 11.45 seconds in taking top honors in the 100 meters last Saturday. Her time of 11.45 was just .05 seconds off the school record set by Hooker in 1978.
She holds the third-best time in both events in The American. Her 11.45 time in the 100 meters is only .03 seconds behind the top time in the conference. Among the national leaders, Chazez is 48th in the 100 meters and 60th in the 200 meters.
Most of the Tigers track and field squads are off from competition this weekend to train for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships May 12-14. However, a few performers are scheduled to compete at the Ole Miss Classic Saturday, May 6 in Oxford, Miss.
