Tigers Athletics Success In The Classroom

Fourteen of 17 teams with 3.0 GPA or higher for 2017 spring semester.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a 2016 fall semester in which it set nine academic records, University of Memphis Athletics added two more marks and one record re-set with the release of its 2017 spring semester report card Wednesday.
Memphis student-athletes combined to post a 3.158 grade-point average (GPA), the second-highest GPA in athletics department history. It is the eighth-straight semester and 11 of the last 13 semesters that Tigers student-athletes posted a 3.0 GPA or higher. Fourteen of the athletics department's 17 teams recorded a 3.0 GPA or higher.
"It was another truly impressive semester in the classroom by our student-athletes" said Dr. Bob Baker, Director of the University's Center for Athletic Academic Services (CAAS). "Tiger Nation has much to be proud of with how our student-athletes perform in the classroom and their respective sports."

The 2017 spring semester GPA was second to the 2016 fall semester GPA, which was a school-record 3.176. The department's 2016 spring semester GPA (3.114) was Tigers Athletics' third-best, making the last three semesters the top-three for GPA in the department's history.

The Memphis cheer and pom squads also had a great 2017 spring semester in the classroom. The two teams combined for three with 4.0 GPA, 17 on the Dean's List and 27 in the Tiger 3.0 Club.
The 2017 spring semester followed the 2016 fall semester in which Tigers athletics set nine academic records. Those records were: department overall GPA, freshmen student-athlete GPA, male student-athlete GPA (broken in 2017 spring), freshman female student-athlete GPA, men's golf GPA, women's soccer GPA, softball GPA and men's track and field GPA.
The Tigers also performed well in their arenas of competitions in 2016-17. Among the highlights were:

The Memphis athletics department had 50 student-athletes earn their degrees and participate in 2017 spring commencement May 6. The University's first 2017 summer session begins May 30.

- Football with its highest GPA (2.73) in program history
- Men's soccer with its highest GPA (3.57) in program history
- Men's soccer GPA (3.57) with the highest male team GPA in the athletics department, the first time in its program history
- Women's tennis with the highest female sports team GPA (3.80)
- Freshman GPA at 3.201
- 40 student-athletes with 4.0 GPA
- 125 student-athletes that earned Dean's List recognition, including 40 freshmen
- 219 student-athletes in the Tiger 3.0 Club, including 61 freshmen

- Men's tennis earning an NCAA Championships berth, the program's fifth postseason in the last six years
- Men's and women's track and field with seven American Athletic Conference individual champions and 14 school records (indoor/outdoor combined)
- Softball winning its first league tournament game since Memphis joined The American in July of 2013
- Women's golf sending Michaela Fletcher to the NCAA Columbus Regional, and the squad winning its own Memphis Women's Intercollegiate
- Women's soccer making an NCAA Tournament appearance
- Football posting a winning campaign and receiving a Boca Raton Bowl berth
- Women's cross country securing its all-time best finishes at the American Athletic Conference and NCAA South Region championships
- Men's cross country winning two team titles in the same season for the first time since 1998
